The Independent Expert Scientific Committee on Unconventional Gas Development and Large Coal Mining Development (IESC) is a statutory committee of leading scientists that independently advises government regulators on the impacts that unconventional gas and large coal mining developments may have on Australia’s water resources.
Under its legislative functions, the IESC provides scientific advice in relation to proposed unconventional gas and coal mining developments that are likely to have a significant impact on water resources. The committee acknowledges that there are broader social, economic and cultural values associated with water resources.
The IESC was formerly known as the Independent Expert Scientific Committee on Coal Seam Gas and Large Coal Mining Development prior to the commencement of the Nature Repair (Consequential Amendments) Act 2023 on 15 December 2023.
